Minors

The University offers students a wide variety of minors that enrich their course of study and complement their primary major. Minors may expand a student's knowledge and skills in an area that augments preparation for a particular career. Other students may choose to enroll in a minor simply to learn more about an area of personal interest. Most minor focus on a particular discipline (e.g., History or Geology), while some are more interdisciplinary in nature and include courses from a variety of disciplines (e.g., Black and African Diaspora Studies).

The College of Liberal Arts requires students to complete a minor before graduation. Students in other colleges may elect to do so, though completion of the minor may increase the total number of credit hours earned before graduation.

Requirements

A minor concentration consists of a minimum of 18 credit hours (generally 6 courses) in an approved area. At least 6 hours must be completed at the 300 or 400 level. In certain majors, there are special requirements for the minor. Check with an academic advisor or the dean should there be questions. Finally, all course pre- and co-requisites must be met to take any of the courses listed in the minor. Check catalog course descriptions to determine pre- and co-requisite course requirements.

  • A minor must consist of at least 18 credit hours of coursework.
  • At least 6 hours of credit toward the minor must be at the 300-400 level.
  • At least 6 hours of credit toward the minor must be taken at UL Lafayette.
  • Students must meet all requirements and prerequisites listed in the catalog for all courses in the minor.
  • The minor description must specify which, if any, general education courses can be double-counted, toward general education requirement and toward the minor.
  • All minors are governed by the college that houses the discipline of the minor, and in the case of cross-college interdisciplinary minors, the primary college of the minor. The dean of that college will have final say over the contents, rules, minimum performance standards and availability of the minor, and any course substitutions or other deviations from the curriculum specified for the minor.
  • A student must inform his or her advisor of the intent to complete requirements for a minor no later than at completion of the degree plan.
  • At a minimum, a student must have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average with no more than one D in the minor area to complete that minor.
  • Completion of a minor will be note on the student's transcript.
  • Each college may specify whether students in that college are required to have a minor to graduate.
  • Minors will not be awarded retroactively after graduation.
