College of Liberal Arts Mentorship Program

Launching in Fall 2025, the College of Liberal Arts Mentorship Program pairs high-achieving students (GPA 3.7+) with peers facing academic challenges. Designed to boost success and retention, the pilot will support mentees through weekly themed activities, goal setting, and five hours of dedicated academic and personal development time. Themes include time management, communication, mental health, research, and career planning. Mentees will also participate in supervised study sessions and workshops led by campus partners. Insights from this pilot will guide the development of a lasting, impactful mentorship initiative within the college.

Kathy Ashworth Civic Engagement Award

Thanks to the generosity of Kathy Ashworth and Larry Sides and the wonderful contributions of our staff and faculty committee, we have developed the Kathy Ashworth Civic Engagement Award, a community-engaged internship for first-generation students who are sophomores at UL. This academic internship is a year-long experience: In the fall semester, students will take a semester course centered on the meaning of service and community engagement. In the spring, students will be matched with a community organization where they will intern for 100 hours.

We want to congratulate the inaugural cohort of internship recipients (2025-2026):

Semora Kennon – Department of Political Science
Denaecia Lewis – Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Human Development & Family Science
Grace Randall – Department of Criminal Justice
Alaysha Veal – Department of Criminal Justice

Dean’s Student Advisory Council

This council is comprised of students who are well-rounded—those with strong academic performance, active involvement within the department, and the ability to thoughtfully represent and articulate the concerns of their peers. Student Ambassadors will serve in an advisory capacity to the Dean, participating in monthly meetings and contributing to discussions on student-related issues.

We want to congratulate the inaugural cohort of advisors (2025-2026):

College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Graduates

The Outstanding Graduate Award is one of the highest honors the University bestows upon a graduating senior in recognition of outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. Every spring and fall semester, deans from eight academic colleges each nominate a student as an Outstanding Graduate, based on leadership, scholarship and service. A selection committee of the Alumni Association interviews the candidates and selects one to receive the overall award.
